Drawing: Seven Curatorial Responses
November 16—December 16, 2004
The contribution of not-for-profit arts organizations to the growth and vitality of the Minnesota arts community is unparalleled nationally. These organizations provide sustenance to the Twin Cities through exhibitions of challenging art and the creation of complex communities that include diverse audiences, journalists and critics, staff and volunteers, individual and corporate donors, working boards, and artists.
Drawing: Seven Curatorial Responses provided a forum for seven uniquely talented local curators affiliated with non-for-profit arts organization. The invited curators: Cole Rogers, High Point Press; Christi Atkinson, Soap Factory; John Rasmussen, Midway Contemporary Art; Kristopher Douglas, the Rochester Art Center; Tim Peterson, Franklin Art Works; Clarence Morgan, Department of Art, University of Minnesota; and Suzy Greenberg, Soo Visual Arts Center, addressed contemporary drawing within an expanded field. The new pluralism in drawing, while inclusive of traditional methods and forms, now extends to work in three-dimensions as well as video, installation and printmaking. The curators selected a roster of over thirty participants including internationally recognized artists Rina Banerjee, Wade Guyton, Julie Mehretu and local talents David Lefkowitz, Alexa Horochowski, Mary Esch and Stevie Rexroth. The exhibition was conceived and organized by Alexis Kuhr, Associate Professor, Department of Art, University of Minnesota.
